A new Florida law will require more accurate property tax estimates on online residential real estate listings beginning February 1, 2027, helping prospective homebuyers better understand their potential property taxes before purchasing a home. Online residential real estate listing platforms that choose to display estimated property taxes must use a standardized methodology based on the propertyโ€™s listing price and information published by the Florida Department of Revenue. Listing platforms that do not provide an estimate may no longer display the sellerโ€™s current property taxes and instead must direct consumers to the county property appraiserโ€™s tax estimator or website. ๐‘๐ž๐š๐ฅ ๐„๐ฌ๐ญ๐š๐ญ๐ž ๐๐ž๐ฐ๐ฌ: Gov. Ron DeSantis has revealed a plan to overhaul the Sunshine State's property tax system, potentially eliminating taxes on most owner-occupied homes. Florida lawmakers are gathering in Tallahassee this week for a special session to review the entire proposal. If the legislature passes the measure, it would be placed on the ballot this November and would require support from 60% of voters to pass. If that happens, the tax reform would take effect beginning in 2027. Floridaโ€™s homestead exemption significantly reduces annual property taxes. A homestead property in Florida is defined as a person's primary residence, one they must live in and own or have a primary interest in. "If it's successful, when you raise it to the $500,000 limit, that's 92% of all Florida residents [who] would be tax-free," the governor said. Critics of the plan say the tax overhaul will take away billions spent on schools and vital government functions such as police and first responders. Have questions about real estate in Florida?
