Please see this important message from Lee County Sheriffs Office:
“ Unlicensed Contracting is a Felony During The Existence of a State of Emergency, FSS 489.127(2)(c)
To all the residents of Cape Coral & Lee County:
As we begin the recovery process from Hurricane Ian, now is the time to be vigilant of who you hire to repair your home.
With the amount of damage Hurricane Ian has done to our area, this is an opportunity for unlicensed contractors to come into the area and take advantage of our residents. Now there are many licensed and reputable contractors coming into our area to assist with damage repairs but please take the time to follow these few tips before you make your decision to hire a contractor.
1. If the price is too good too be true then proceed with caution.
2. If they inform you that you do not need a permit then proceed with caution. The CCCIA is currently working with city officials on implementing an emergency permitting process as we did in Hurricane Irma.
3. NEVER pay the full amount up front with the unlicensed contractor telling you that I can give you a "better deal" if you pay up front.
4. Ask to see their license. Contractors have worked hard to obtain their licenses and hold proper workman’s comp and liability insurance. They will not have a problem showing you their credentials.
These next few weeks are going to be difficult for our city as we start to rebuild and the CCCIA wants to make sure that our residents are in the know and properly taken care of.
Please report any suspected unlicensed contractors to the following locations:
Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation at https://www.myfloridalicense.com/wl11.asp
Complaints against State Certified Contractors should be filed with the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. You can call the Unlicensed Activity Hotline at 1-866-532-1440”
