How Senators fans are moving past the Tkachuk trade: Facebook jersey sales, ‘Forget Brady Day’

OTTAWA — It is a buyers’ market for Brady Tkachuk jerseys, if Facebook Marketplace is any indication. One search gives you a handful of red, white and black Ottawa Senators sweaters with the former team captain’s name and number on the back. Some are signed and preserved; others are worn and used. Some sellers wear their emotions on their sleeves, referring to Tkachuk as “Trady” instead of Brady — or just “Traitor.”

The listed prices range from $60 to $400, in Canadian dollars. But at least some sellers are willing to negotiate.

“Will sell for $120 if you let me watch you burn it with you or if you plan to replace the name tag with (former Sens center Kyle) Turris,” one posted.

Nearly two weeks have passed since the 26-year-old winger departed Ottawa, making himself at home in South Florida with the Panthers — and his brother Matthew — through a trade request and subsequent blockbuster deal. In that span, certain supporters of Tkachuk’s old team decided that they wanted no part of the player who left them behind. And that includes tangible forms of his memory.

“My policy is I only keep jerseys of players who are on the team,” said Sens fan Pierre Bellemare, who is selling a white Adidas Tkachuk jersey at $60.

“If he’s not looking to represent the Sens, then I don’t really feel like I want to represent him,” added Eric Chau, who listed another Tkachuk jersey at $150. “I’d rather have another player that wants to stay in Ottawa to represent.”

Even the Senators themselves are offering a solution. Through Tuesday, the team is allowing fans to “chuk out” their old Tkachuk jerseys in exchange for 40 percent off regularly priced merchandise at the Canadian Tire Centre’s team store in Kanata, Ont. The store is usually closed on Sundays, but its doors opened last weekend to accommodate fans. (The promotion only applies to Fanatics-branded jerseys in the Sens’ current home, away and alternate rotation. So sellers of older gear, like Bellemare, would be out of luck.)

“We just want to have a little fun, to be honest,” Senators marketing director Peter Shier said. “I think we were also reflecting the tone and the attitude of a lot of our fans, you know, that was pretty clear.

“It’s not meant to be disparaging, or it’s not meant to be a cheap shot. It’s just simply a creative way to say, ‘Hey, we’ve got some inventory here. You’ve got inventory.’ If we can help you with that, we’ll give you a 40 percent discount on whatever else you want.”

The Senators aren’t the only professional sports franchise in town taking back Tkachuk jerseys, either. Ottawa’s local baseball team, the Titans of the independent Frontier League, put a unique spin on the star’s departure.

On Tuesday evening, the Titans are hosting “Forget Brady Day” at Ottawa Stadium. Fans can fill out a form, buy a ticket to the game that night, and bring any Tkachuk jersey, regardless of brand. In exchange, the Titans will provide a new No. 7 jersey — this one for their star third baseman, A.J. Wright, a 29-year-old in his fifth season with the team.

“We thought that Ottawa would like this,” said Titans GM Martin Boyce. “Just based on the way people were talking online immediately after the trade took place and the information that came out afterwards. We wanted to let Ottawa embrace something positive. Well, let’s find a new No. 7.”

The initiative was put together quickly, to the point where Wright learned of its existence on social media after finishing batting practice while on the road in Quebec City. Before long, the promotion spread to various Instagram pages and other social media platforms.

“It’s funny, we’ve had a lot of fans already reach out to me, asking me if it’s true and legit. So I think we might get a decent turnout (on Tuesday) with it,” Wright said.

Not all fans are quick to move on from their Tkachuk jerseys, though. Kevin Lee, known among Sens fans as a die-hard memorabilia collector, plans to keep all nine Tkachuk jerseys he owns.

“I’ve been around long enough, and I bought enough jerseys of people who have come and gone that (it) doesn’t faze me,” Lee said. “I feel bad for the people who maybe bought their first name jersey last year (and they just picked) the captain. That’s really the safest bet. He’s signed for (three) more years. It’s going to be safe.”

And while fans are hurt now, some admit they’ll eventually miss having Tkachuk in Ottawa. The winger has been oft-described as a “unicorn” for his unique physical style of play while producing offensively. However, Tkachuk now joins the likes of Alexei Yashin, Dany Heatley and others on a list of star-caliber players who, for one reason or another, eventually chose to move on from the Senators.

“I didn’t take any of what he did personally,” Bellemare said. “All he said was he wasn’t re-signing here. It was kept quiet until he was traded, so I appreciated that. He could have gone to the media sooner, forced his way out that way. The Sens got a great return for him, so I was very happy with how it went down. I don’t hold any ill will towards Brady.”

It remains to be seen how the Senators and fans will receive Tkachuk during his eventual return to Ottawa next NHL season. Hurt feelings will likely be on display whenever he takes the ice — not to mention touches the puck. But there’s also a chance some in the stands will still be wearing his jersey.

“I’m pretty sure that time heals all wounds when it comes to the players of your team,” Lee said. “If you find someone that has a Yashin jersey or a Heatley jersey, there’s demand for those jerseys. At the time they were traded, not so much.”
