Helpful tips for extreme cold weather

Preventing frozen pipes is all about keeping water flowing and maintaining enough warmth around your plumbing. Here’s a clear guide to help you avoid frozen (and burst) pipes — especially during cold snaps:

🧊 1. Insulate Vulnerable Pipes
• Use foam pipe insulation on exposed pipes in unheated areas (basements, crawl spaces, attics, garages, under sinks).
• in some areas that is not heated, use heat tape or heat cables with a built-in thermostat — these automatically warm pipes when needed.

🌡️ 2. Keep Heat Consistent
• Maintain your home’s indoor temperature at least 55°F (13°C) — even when you’re away.
• Open cabinet doors under sinks (especially along exterior walls) to let warm air circulate around the pipes.
• If possible, seal drafts near pipes — around windows, doors, or cracks in walls.

🚰 3. Keep Water Moving
• During severe cold, let faucets slightly run (especially the furthest one from your main water supply).
A sready slow sream of water helps prevent freezing by keeping water moving.
• Open both hot and cold taps slightly — both lines can freeze.

🧱 4. Protect Exterior Plumbing
• Disconnect garden hoses.
• Close interior shutoff valves feeding outdoor spigots, then open the outside faucet to drain remaining water.
• For year-round protection, install frost-proof hose bibs.

🔍 5. Long-Term Upgrades
• Add pipe insulation when finishing basements or crawl spaces.
• If remodeling, relocate exposed pipes away from exterior walls.
• Insulate walls or floors near plumbing for added protection.

⚠️ If You Suspect a Frozen Pipe
• Turn off the main water supply.
• Open faucets to relieve pressure.
• Gently warm the pipe (hair dryer, heating pad, or space heater nearby — never an open flame).
• If the pipe has burst,
