A World Without Roots
We live in a rapidly changing world. The world has changed more in the last 100 years than it had in the last 10,000, technogically at least. And yet, we are the same. We have the same needs, desires, and impulses that we have always had.
We all need something to ground us, something which is stable, something which gives us a sense of identity. Most of us find that in some form of culture, be it in religion, through sports, through a career, or through less beneficial cultures, such as drug use or other risk seeking behaviors.
Many of us find ourselves without any grounding culture. Without any stability. Those of us who are lucky to find it, find it in different ways. We find stability in different things. Some of us look to traditional values, others new.
What matters, is that we all find something which grounds us, which makes us whole and helps up through the ups and downs in life. We're never all going to share the same culture. The only pheasable way this is possible is through force, through totalitarianism. Unity is not everybody being the same, but the acceptance of our differences. We all find peace in different ways.
So, while we will never fully understand each other, try to respect where others get their peace and meaning, no matter how different their way is from yours. Don't let the news convince you the other side is as evil as they're made out to be.
