What’s a beneficiary, and why does it matter?

A beneficiary is the person who receives funds if you pass away, such as for a bank account or your life insurance. Without a beneficiary on file, your benefits may default to your estate or follow other plan default rules—which can delay access for your loved ones and may not reflect your wishes.

When should you review? After life events like marriage, divorce, birth/adoption, or a change in circumstances—and at least once a year. The last thing we want to do is tell a spouse that your assets are not going to them but to your ex, your estate, or sitting in probate. Let's make sure your beneficiaries have kept up with your life changes.
