The mountain does not receive water it never poured out.
This is the exact mechanism, not a metaphor stretched to fit a nice sentiment. What flows through you shapes what flows back to you, and the relationship is not symbolic, it is structural, the same way a river carves the exact path that its own current determined. The figure in this image does not become a landscape by accident. What passes through the center of the body becomes the terrain surrounding it.
The Hermetic principle of correspondence states that inner and outer are never separate categories, only different distances from the same source. What you cultivate internally, patience, resentment, generosity, fear, does not remain contained. It moves outward, organizing the reality that surrounds you, the same way water moving through stone eventually determines the shape of the canyon. You are not simply affected by your environment. You are constantly authoring it, whether or not you notice the authorship.
The Bhagavad Gita frames this as karma in its precise, mechanical sense, not punishment or reward doled out by an external judge, but the direct continuation of energy already set in motion. What you put in moves through you and becomes what moves out of you, and what moves out of you becomes the conditions you eventually receive back. There is no gap in the circuit large enough to escape through.
Jung understood this as the psyche’s tendency to externalize its internal contents, what is repressed does not vanish, it projects; what is cultivated does not stay hidden, it radiates.
You are not separate from what flows through you. You are what it becomes.

“Unconditional love really exists in each of us. It is part of our deep inner being. It is not so much an active emotion as a state of being. It’s not ‘I love you’ for this or that reason, not ‘I love you if you love me.’ It’s love for no reason, love without an object.”
