Week 2 — The Co-Regulation Cycle.

Your child isn’t learning to regulate their emotions. They’re learning to regulate them through yours. 🧠

🌳 Co-regulation isn’t a technique you pull out in hard moments. It’s a biological process happening between nervous systems constantly, whether you notice or not. Porges’ polyvagal theory shows we’re wired to read the face, voice, and posture of a trusted person to gauge safety.

🌳 Soft face, slow voice, relaxed body → their nervous system downregulates. Tight jaw, sharp voice, tension → it registers threat and escalates, even if your words are technically calm.

🌳 Harvard calls this “serve and return”, and it builds healthy brain architecture. Co-regulation always comes first: kids can’t self-regulate before they’ve been co-regulated, just like they can’t walk before they’ve been held.
Your calm isn’t passive. It’s the most active, evidence-based tool you have.

✨ TODAY’S PRACTICE When you enter a room where your child is upset, deliberately slow your voice and soften your face before you speak. Notice what shifts, in them, and in you.

🌳 Week 2 — Regulate Yourself First

You can’t pour from an empty nervous system. 🧠

The single most impactful intervention for a child’s emotional development is a regulated caregiver. Not perfect. Not endlessly patient. Just regulated most of the time, with genuine repair when it falls apart.

🌳 Young kids don’t self-regulate in isolation. They co-regulate with you. Your nervous system is their external prefrontal cortex until they grow their own. That makes your regulation a child-development intervention, not a luxury.

🌳 The hard truth: you can’t reach your regulated self on empty. Sleep loss, chronic stress, and isolation narrow your window and make your reactive self easier to grab than your responsive one.

✨ TODAY’S PRACTICE
Make two lists — your top 3 regulation depleters (what drains you) and top 3 restorers (what refills you). Then look honestly: are the restorers actually in your week?
