The Boston Area Lactation Connection

This years theme for World Breastfeeding Week is "Closing the Gap." This theme is very close to my heart. Over the years I have volunteered at Vital Village and La Leche League, given free consults to low income families, taught prenatal classes to teen moms and have given clinical presentations and talks to med students and residents on everything from The History of Breastfeeding from an African American Perspective to Breastfeeding Equity in Pediatric Practice. Closing the gap and increasing access to clinical lactation care is something I am always working on and something I am deeply passionate about.

Last year, I started a non-profit aimed at serving Masshealth patients. These families can not typically afford clinical lactation care, and Masshealth is one of the only insurance providers that REFUSES to reimburse. So they are often left getting 10 minute advice from their ped, who doesn't have time to take a full history and often just recommends supplementing with no follow up.
