✨ Why do I use a resistance band (poet and) during scoliosis treatment?

One of the biggest misconceptions about scoliosis is that it’s simply a curve that needs to be stretched.

It isn’t.

Scoliosis is a three-dimensional change in the spine. The vertebrae don’t just bend—they also rotate. That rotation can cause areas of the rib cage and spine to become compressed while other areas become elongated.

That’s where a simple tool like a powerband becomes incredibly valuable.

When I use a band to gently encourage elongation of the thoracic spine, the goal isn’t to “pull the spine straight.” The goal is to create space.

✨ More space for the ribs to move.
✨ More space for the lungs to expand.
✨ More space for the muscles on the compressed side to activate.
✨ More opportunity for your body to learn a more balanced position.

Once we create that space, we can use breathing, muscle activation, and scoliosis-specific movement to help your body recognize and practice a more efficient posture.

The magic isn’t the band itself—it’s how it’s used. Every scoliosis curve is unique, which means the direction, amount of lift, and movement strategy should match your specific curve pattern.

That’s why scoliosis-specific treatment is never one-size-fits-all.

💙 If you’ve ever wondered what your curve is actually doing—or why certain exercises help while others don’t—I’d love to teach you.

Scoliosis isn’t just a side bend—it’s a three-dimensional change in the spine and rib cage that affects alignment, muscle activity, breathing, and balance.

What many people don’t realize is that the muscles that feel “tight” are often working overtime to create stability around areas of rotation, collapse, and imbalance. Your body is trying to hold itself together the best way it knows how.

Think about it this way: if the answer was simply stretching the tight side, why would you need to stretch the exact same area every single day?

Temporary relief is not the same as lasting change.

Real improvement comes from helping the body find a better strategy:
✨ Improving alignment
✨ Building postural control
✨ Restoring balanced muscle activity
✨ Expanding breathing into restricted areas
✨ Creating stability where it’s actually needed

Stretching can absolutely be part of the plan—but it’s only one piece of the puzzle.

The goal isn’t to make your spine “looser.” The goal is to help your body become more organized, supported, and efficient so it doesn’t have to rely on tension as a survival strategy.

One of the most valuable tools for scoliosis-specific home practice is a DoBarre.

The DorBarre provides external feedback and support to help you find spinal elongation, improve postural awareness, and better understand your unique curve pattern. Rather than simply “standing up straighter,” it allows you to explore length, alignment, and expansion in a way that’s often difficult to feel on your own.

By creating a stable reference point, the DoBarre can help you:
✨ Improve awareness of your scoliosis curves
✨ Practice active spinal elongation
✨ Explore expansion into areas of restriction and concavity
✨ Reinforce corrective positions learned during treatment sessions
✨ Build confidence with your home exercise program

The goal isn’t perfection—it’s developing a deeper understanding of your body and creating opportunities for more balanced movement and breathing throughout the day.

Small, consistent practice can make a big difference.

It’s Scoliosis Awareness Month—here are 3 things every person with scoliosis should know.

June is Scoliosis Awareness Month 💚

If there’s one thing I wish every person with scoliosis knew, it’s that you are more than a number on an X-ray.

✔️ Every curve pattern is unique.
✔️ Scoliosis affects the body in three dimensions.
✔️ There are ways to actively support your spine and improve how you move and feel.

Whether you’re newly diagnosed, managing scoliosis as an adult, or supporting a child with scoliosis, understanding the condition is the first step toward making informed decisions about care.
