🔹 What Is a Hurricane?
A hurricane is a severe tropical storm or cyclone with winds over 74 mph, often accompanied by thunderstorms, tornadoes, heavy rain, and dangerous flooding. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November, peaking mid-August to late October.
✅ Before an Emergency:
Prepare an emergency kit and family communication plan.
Know your local evacuation routes and higher ground locations.
Trim trees and shrubs near your home.
Clear out clogged rain gutters and downspouts.
Bring in outdoor items like furniture and trash cans.
If in a high-rise, plan to shelter below the 10th floor.
Consider installing a generator for power outages.
🚨 During an Emergency:
Stay tuned to radio or TV for official updates.
Follow instructions from emergency officials.
Stay indoors, away from windows and glass doors.
Close all interior doors and brace exterior doors.
Take shelter in a small, interior room or hallway on the lowest level.
Avoid using phones (except for emergencies) and don’t use elevators.
