🌪️ Hurricane Preparedness & Safety Guide
🔹 What Is a Hurricane?
A hurricane is a severe tropical storm or cyclone with winds over 74 mph, often accompanied by thunderstorms, tornadoes, heavy rain, and dangerous flooding. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November, peaking mid-August to late October.
✅ Before an Emergency:
Prepare an emergency kit and family communication plan.
Know your local evacuation routes and higher ground locations.
Trim trees and shrubs near your home.
Clear out clogged rain gutters and downspouts.
Bring in outdoor items like furniture and trash cans.
If in a high-rise, plan to shelter below the 10th floor.
Consider installing a generator for power outages.
🚨 During an Emergency:
Stay tuned to radio or TV for official updates.
Follow instructions from emergency officials.
Stay indoors, away from windows and glass doors.
Close all interior doors and brace exterior doors.
Take shelter in a small, interior room or hallway on the lowest level.
Avoid using phones (except for emergencies) and don’t use elevators.
Leave mobile homes; they are unsafe in high winds.
Do not evacuate during the height of the storm.
Fill bathtubs or large containers with water (especially if you rely on electric water pumps).
🚧 After the Hurricane
Listen for updates about flooding or road hazards.
Return home only when authorities say it’s safe.
Avoid driving unless necessary; beware of flooded or damaged roads.
Steer clear of downed power lines and report them.
Do not enter buildings with floodwater, gas smell, or fire damage unless cleared by officials.
Inspect and photograph all damage for insurance.
Use battery-powered flashlights only—never candles.
Watch for wild animals (e.g., snakes) when cleaning up.
Avoid using tap water until declared safe.
Check food for spoilage—“If in doubt, throw it out.”
Wear protective clothing during cleanup to prevent injury.
Keep pets close and secure.
