Aside from switching to green cleaning products, there are other ways to reduce your exposure to potentially harmful chemicals. Always read labels carefully and avoid products with warnings like“Danger” & “Caution”. NEVER MIX PRODUCTS together, this can cause fatal chemical reactions. While cleaning, make sure the room is well ventilated by opening windows, doors and using a fan. Lastly, wear protection like gloves, masks and goggles. See our newsletter on how to reduce exposures and make safer diy cleaning products. Visit the Environmental Working Group for more suggestions! https://bit.ly/NL_eng https://bit.ly/NL_span

With the help of Berkeley Lab, our LUCIR study found higher levels of toxic chemicals in the air when participants cleaned with their regular cleaning products. When they switched to green cleaning products the levels of many chemicals of concern decreased. The graph below shows decreases in three important chemicals: acetaldehyde (reduced 38%), 1,4- dioxane (reduced 49%), chloroform (reduced 86%), all just by switching to green products!

Our LUCIR study investigated toxic chemicals in cleaning products and how to reduce your exposures! We found higher levels of carcinogens and hormone disruptors in conventional cleaning products. Exposures greatly decreased when participants switched to using only green cleaning products! Want to share our study with family and friends? Check out our newsletter for an abundance of information on study results, ways to reduce exposures, and how to make DIY products at home!

Cleaning products help prevent the spread of diseases. But, can exposures to toxic chemicals in some cleaning products also make you sick? LUCIR Study Youth Researchers partnered with our Berkeley Public Health team to investigate Latina’s exposures to toxic chemicals in conventional cleaning products. We found multiple chemicals associated with increased risk of cancer in conventional cleaning products and noted significant decreases when study participants switched to green cleaning products. For details on how to reduce your family’s exposures, watch this youth-made PSA series! English: https://bit.ly/PSA_Eng & Spanish: https://bit.ly/PSA_Span
