2020 Berkeley China Summit (BCS) Keynote Speaker --- Rock Star Ex-Dean of Haas Rich Lyons
UC Berkeley’s 1st Chief Innovation & Entrepreneurship Officer

Who says all university top-dogs are serious academics?

Who says business schools are all about teaching you how to make money?

Berkeley’s guitar toting and song singing, could-have-been-a-rock-star Dean Rich Lyons decided to use culture to distinguish Berkeley’s Haas School of Business from other top-notch b-schools.

Lots of smart people apply to top business schools. But as a top business school, what kind of smart people do you want to attract and carry your school’s reputation out into the world? As the Dean of Berkeley’s Haas School of Business from 2008 to 2018, Rich Lyons sought to define a set of values and principles that embody the Berkeley-Haas culture and use that to attract like-minded smart people. He led a school-wide effort to create the four Defining Leadership Principles of: Question the Status Quo, Confidence Without Attitude, Students Always, and Beyond Yourself. That culture now permeates Haas and its students and alumni. They in turn carry this culture to the business world and the world at large.

After his tenure as Dean of Haas, Rich Lyons took a break to be with family, play guitar and teach finance. Then in January of 2020, he became Berkeley’s first ever Chief Innovation and Entrepreneurship Officer, overseeing the development of campus-wide ecosystem for innovation and entrepreneurship, including patenting and technology licensing. Being a rock-star will have to wait a bit longer.

We are delighted to welcome Prof. Rich Lyons as one of our keynote speakers for BCS 2020. Rich received his BS in finance from Berkeley and PhD in economics from MIT. He was an assistant professor at Columbia Business School before joining the faculty at Berkeley-Haas in 1993. He served as acting Dean of Haas from 2004 to 2005, then took a leave from Berkeley to serve as Goldman Sachs’ Chief Learning Officer before returning to Haas to serve as Dean from 2008 to 2018.

Due to COVID-19, we will be holding this year‘s BCS in an online format. This gives us a great opportunity to involve speakers and audiences from broader geographic locations including China and all over the world, enabling even more bilateral discussions on business, technology, and culture.
