“I’d be satisfied,” William Keith once said, “if I could reach the power and success of Tom Hill.” Hill was one of California’s most successful landscape artists during his lifetime. Both Leland Stanford and John Muir commissioned paintings from him. Waterfall joined the Haggin Collection in 1964, a gift from the Catts family of Stockton.

Pictured: Waterfall, 1877 by Thomas Hill — this is one of the two core fine art painting currently on display at the Haggin which is not from the Haggin family’s collection.

The Stockton Channel by William Alexander Coulter. This Coulter painting (1884) depicts a scene of the Stockton Channel looking west from El Dorado Street at twilight. This painting is a beautiful combination of both the art and history of our region.
