On March 15, 1965, the for voting rights reached a turning point. Addressing a joint session of Congress, President Lyndon B. Johnson introduced what became the Voting Rights Act and declared “We shall overcome”, echoing the words of protestors across the country.
Today, as debates over ballot access continue, we remember that the promise “we shall overcome” requires vigilance, courage, conviction, and persistence.
