Today, the continues with the third No Kings Protest. All across the country, citizens are gathering with a shared message: in democracy, power belongs to the people—not to kings. Accountability, representation, and checks and balances on power are not partisan ideals. They are the basic pillars of democracy and our great American experiment. No one is above them.

Today marks the 8th anniversary of the first protest, when students took to the streets in Washington DC and cities across the country to demand a world free of gun violence. Since then, 250+ gun safety laws have been passed but despite these victories, gun violence remains the leading cause of death for American children. On March 15, 1965, the for voting rights reached a turning point. Addressing a joint session of Congress, President Lyndon B. Johnson introduced what became the Voting Rights Act and declared “We shall overcome”, echoing the words of protestors across the country.

Today, as debates over ballot access continue, we remember that the promise “we shall overcome” requires vigilance, courage, conviction, and persistence.
