I'm going to admit something a little embarrassing.

I never heard of Juneteenth until I moved to Berkeley more than 20 years ago. And when I first heard the word, I genuinely thought it was a fancy way of saying June thirteenth.

In my defense, I went to all white Catholic schools through high school. Then college, which was dental hygiene, also all white. Nobody ever taught me. It simply wasn't in the rooms I grew up in.

So I did what I always do when I hear something for the first time. I Googled it. And that's when I learned what Juneteenth actually means, and why it matters.

That little moment of not knowing stuck with me. Because I realized how much of this work lives inside organizations and trainings that most people never get access to. If you're not handed it, you don't learn it.
