During NeighborWorks Weeks 2026, Fahe is sharing housing projects that are helping strengthen communities across Appalachia.

Cunningham Terrace in Kingsport, TN is a new 12-unit affordable housing community designed for residents age 60+ and built to ADA accessibility standards. Located near public transportation, healthcare, grocery stores, and the Kingsport Senior Center, the development transforms a once-deteriorating downtown property into stable, accessible housing for local seniors.

This project was made possible through Tennessee ARPA funding and partnerships between Fahe’s Member KHRA, the Greater Kingsport Alliance for Development, the City of Kingsport, and Frontier Health — helping expand housing opportunities and create lasting community impact.

May is Affordable Housing Month, and Fahe is celebrating the people and organizations making a difference in Appalachia amid the affordable housing crisis.

After a flood in 2022, Clova Short spent three years in her flood-ravaged home in eastern Kentucky. She searched for somewhere safe, affordable, and accessible for her granddaughter.

Fahe Member H.O.M.E.S. Inc. helped Clova and her family find a home that met their needs, with a mortgage payment less than the cost of renting and electric bills lower than what she was paying.

“This home is a blessing, especially for my granddaughter,” Clova said. “I don’t have to worry every time it rains that it will flood again, and I am just so thankful.”

Educational success starts with stability at home. ​

When families are forced to move from place to place because rent increases, aging homes fail, or repairs are out of reach, children carry that stress, too.​

Studies show that students who move three or more times during their early school years (K–8) perform over one full grade level lower in reading and math than peers who remain in the same home.​
