Peter Stark is an adventurer, historian, and bestselling author whose work explores themes of exploration, survival, leadership under extreme conditions, and encounters between Euro-American explorers and Indigenous peoples in North America. His books include 'Last Breath', Amazon’s Best Outdoors Book of the Year; 'At the Mercy of the River'; 'The Last Empty Places'; the New York Times bestseller 'Astoria', a finalist for the PEN USA Award in Research Nonfiction; 'Young Washington', a finalist for the George Washington Book Prize; and 'Gallop Toward the Sun'. His 2026 release, 'The Lost Cities of El Norte: Coronado’s Quest, the Unconquered West, and the Birth of American Indian Resistance', was selected as a Library Reads pick and named one of Kirkus Reviews’ top nonfiction books that read like novels. A former adventure-travel journalist, Stark has written for publications including Outside, Smithsonian, and The New York Times Magazine.
