Autumn and its time to cut back the woody perennials. Thyme, Rosemary, Wormwood, Lavender, and this, Hyssop, all get a haircut. The best approach is to cut just above the woody stem from last year. Shape the plant by cutting hard at the base and rounding out more gently at the crown, making as close to a hemisphere as possible. If you have lots of time, strength, and not many plants, hand tools are just great. If you have lots of plants, a power hedge trimmer will save you a case of tendonitis.
