Micronized progesterone is an oral capsule that many women take in addition to their systemic estrogen. For women who have a uterus, taking estrogen without a progestin can increase the risk for endometrial cancer.

A small percentage of women will have side effects from oral micronized progesterone.

Alternatives exist:
- Use the micronized progesterone vaginally
- Try a different type of progestin
- Progestin-containing IUD, such as a Mirena or Kyleena
- Try a combination patch that includes both a progestin and estrogen
- Duavee - an oral capsule containing estrogen and a "SERM" (which acts anti-estrogen on the uterus and breast)

While many women do great on transdermal estrogen and micronized progesterone a few need an alternative.
