150 degrees. That’s what’s coming out of this pipe right now. ⁣

It’s exhaust from our compost aeration system, and instead of just releasing it, we run it through a biofilter made of wood chips. The wood chips capture the moisture, trap the organic compounds that cause odor, and then get folded right back into the compost. Hot air in. ⁣

Better compost out. Nothing wasted.

Meet the compost squeeze test. 🌱 ⁣

It sounds simple but this is one of the most important things we do to keep our compost piles healthy. Grab a handful, give it a squeeze, and you want to see one or two drops of water come out. Think of it like a wrung out sponge, moist but not dripping. ⁣

Why does it matter? The microbes that are actually doing all the work of breaking down your food scraps need two things to thrive: moisture and oxygen. Too dry or too wet and they’ll slow down, go dormant, or even expire⁣

So we are out here squeezing compost on the regular to make sure those little guys have everything they need to do their job. 🙌🌎

We don’t just compost food waste. We fuel our trucks with it. 🌱⁣ ⁣ ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
We’re running our fleet on two alternative fuels to reduce our use of petroleum diesel. The first is renewable diesel, a cleaner fuel made from vegetable oil. The second is something we’re really proud of, waste vegetable oil that we collect directly from a local restaurant, filter through a centrifuge, and burn as fuel once the engine is hot.⁣ ⁣ ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Closing the loop at every level. That’s the goal.

Did you know you can run a diesel truck on vegetable oil? 🌱⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Renewable diesel is refined from plant oils, no crude oil involved, and it’s a drop-in replacement for regular diesel. No engine modifications. No changes to emissions controls. Just cleaner fuel, right into the tank.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Running this truck on renewable diesel brings its emissions down to the same level as a brand new vehicle with every modern emission control on it.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
That’s a big deal for a fleet vehicle like ours that’s on the road every single day doing the work of keeping food waste out of landfills.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Small swaps. Big impact. That’s what we’re about. 🌎⁣⁣

Not all compost is created equal 🌱

05/09/2026

It’s the last few days of International Compost Awareness Week 🌱 and there’s one thing most people, even composters, don’t fully understand: why can’t food scraps just break down in a landfill?⁣

Two words: no oxygen. ⁣

When food waste gets buried and packed down, it breaks down without oxygen, releasing methane, one of the most potent greenhouse gases out there. But in a compost system where oxygen is actively managed? Minimal emissions and you get a usable product that goes right back into our farms and gardens. ⁣

Composting isn’t just feel-good recycling. It’s climate action. ♻️⁣

Small changes, big impact. 🌱 ⁣

We’ve made the switch to Bio Blend, a biodegradable grease we’re now using across all of our machines, from our loader and skid steer to the trucks out on the road. ⁣

It’s one more step in our commitment to moving away from petroleum-based products and keeping potential contaminants out of the environment. ⁣

Every detail matters when you’re in the business of closing the loop. ♻️

This is how we “trap” worms, but really, it’s more like a worm paradise 🪱✨⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
In a healthy worm bin, the food and bedding eventually becomes so well digested that it’s ready to be screened and harvested as worm castings. The problem is, the worms are still living in it, and if they go through the screening process, it can actually harm them.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
So instead of forcing anything, we gently guide them. We add fresh food scraps and moisture to one section of the bed, and the worms naturally migrate into it because it’s more delicious.⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Once the worms are concentrated we scoop them up and gently move them to another part of the bin giving us access to the finished vermicompost below. This process keeps the worms healthy and creates a sustainable and productive system🌱
