Sat on this for a couple of days, but I think I’ll go ahead and post this now.
“Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you.” - Hebrews 13:17

And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold. - Matthew 24:12.
To grow - or wax in some translations - cold gives us an imagery of a wind that blows and chills that spiritual virtue of love within our hearts. To think that our love for the Lord can "grow" into a cold indifference due to the winds (and climate) around us, this is a sobering thought.
What might be equally or more so troubling in this passage is the term “many” that is perhaps better translated as “majority.” This should cause even the most radical to search their heart and see if the fire of love is still burning.
The majority will grow cold. Stay on the narrow way. Keep burning. Don't let the winds of lawlessness, the climate of the current days, the troubles we face -- wax cold the fires on the altar of your heart.
