New development at head of Bayou Manchac may uncover foundations and artifacts associated with the British Fort Bute built in 1766 and captured by the Spanish in 1779 immediately before the Battle of Baton Rouge. Fort Bute was also the site of the only Louisiana land skirmish between the British and Americans during the Revolutionary War.
