I started Smokecignals in 2011. I was able to switch from smoking to va**ng and had been making e liquids for myself and a few friends, and I decided that I would make it a business. The company was exclusively online until 2012 when I decided that I would open a brick-and-mortar shop. I signed the lease in October of 2012 (about a week before I got married).

Then in the first part of 2013, I decided that I needed to bring on some help. I made my first hire and quickly grew until I needed to hire more people.

Since that first hire, the safety of my employees has been a top priority. That is reflected in my employee handbook, and in all of my business decisions this last 8 years. I have gone without for myself through tough times to make sure that my staff has what they need to be safe. I'm not martyring myself, I'm just laying out some groundwork for the rest of this post.

In the last 12 months, we've experienced hurricanes, winter apocalypse, and a pandemic. I have consistently erred on the side of customer and employee safety (stores closed on sunny days for hurricanes that missed us, full thaw before reopening, etc), and I will continue to make decisions based on safety.

I know that not everyone believes that masks work. I know that there are people who don't believe that this pandemic is anywhere near as bad as what has been reported, but when I'm told that masks will help to protect people, I'm going to mandate they be worn while doing business with us. I'm going to follow guidelines put forth by doctors and scientists that have a lot more education than "your research."

I'm sorry for the need for this rant. I'm sorry if you fall into the category of people who think I'm ridiculous for protecting myself and my staff from "the flu," but at the end of the day, I want to do what's best for the people I care about, and I always will.
