It was forty-seven years ago on a Friday November 3, 1978 I was filled with much anticipation and floods of emotions for it was the day before the biggest life changing event outside of salvation that was about to take place. On Saturday November 4, 1978 I was going to share the rest of my life with Karen LaVelle Black as my wife, companion and friend.
I was young with no real experience of living on my own, or paying "real" bills such as rent, utilities, water, or even buying groceries let alone taking on the role as provider and protector of someone else's adult daughter.
This was new to both of us because we never really lived for any length of time outside of the comfort of our parent's home and provisions.
We were both 2 years into college and we both dropped the bomb on our parents that we decided to quit school and get married. And after much debate from both sides we convinced our parents that we had decided to get married with or without their blessings and thankfully they all eventually gave us the nod and their blessings.
So Friday was a day of wedding rehearsals and a rehearsal dinner and then the last few hours left as my single status was slipping away making room for married head of household.
On the morrow, Karen and I will be Husband and Wife and the beginning of a new chapter in our lives together as Lovers and Friends!
Thanks Patricia Woods for sharing this video of our family reunion trip to the Smithsonian African American Museum in Washington, DC
