Why is training important?

No one doubts that a car going 70 mph has great lethal potential and there is a proportional responsibility on the driver to maintain and control the vehicle. Let's say a driver's license lasts 5 years (the same as a concealed carry permit in Louisiana). You drive once, every 5 years, for the driving test to get your license in a relatively calm and sterile environment. Now, you have an emergency where life hangs in the balance. Let's say you have to drive someone to the hospital and an ambulance can't get there in time. You're the only one able to drive and on top of that, it's raining heavily. How comfortable do you feel getting that person to the hospital in a timely fashion?

I'm sure you can see where I'm going with this. If you only shoot once every 5 years for the permit, in a controlled and sterile environment and don't practice otherwise, do you feel comfortable making that shot, under duress, with split second judgment and with a gun that the extent of your familiarization with is leaving it in the holster and putting it on everyday? Would you trust a stranger to make that same shot?

Get out and train.
