Pruning is an art and I agree with most of the suggestions in this drawing.
Here are some further guidelines:
- Do NOT prune newly planted or newly transplanted trees for at least a year. They need energy to develop a new root system and they get energy from their photosynthesizing leaves.
- Trim less than 20% of the tree per year, so if you have a tree with multiple problems, choose the main leader first, and then trim away crossing branches and or suckers in subsequent years. It may take 3 years or more to correct a tree's form.
- Unless a tree is close to a sidewalk or other human infrastructure, there is no need to prune away lower branches. Trimming a tree up will increase the maintenance because more light and therefore more weeds will grow at the foot of the tree. Also, a tree with low branches provides better habitat.
- Keep as many of the interior branches as possible for better habitat and also because these protected branches will photosynthesize more on hot days since they are shaded. This makes the tree more resilient in the face of a changing climate.

Read the story of my winged elm, which was in terrible shape when I got it, but now it's a beautiful tree that's more than 20 feet tall. https://greengardeningmatters.blogspot.com/2020/07/winged-elm-beautiful-florida-native.html
