One of the biggest advantages we have isn’t a market prediction or some “secret” investment strategy.

It’s having the right tools.

One example is discretionary block trading.

When we determine that a change should be made, we can execute that trade across the appropriate client accounts in minutes.

Not weeks or months.

That means clients receive timely, consistent implementation instead of waiting while the same trade is entered one account at a time.

Could I spend months manually placing the same trade across an entire book of business?

Sure.

But I don’t believe that’s where I create the most value for my clients.

I’d rather spend that time helping clients make better financial decisions, navigate major life events, identify tax planning opportunities, prepare for retirement, and answer the questions that matter most to them.

Technology will never replace good advice. But when it’s paired with experience and good judgment, it allows advisors to spend less time on administrative tasks and more time serving the people who trust them.

Sometimes the greatest value isn’t just what you do. It’s having the systems and technology that allow you to focus on what matters most.

This is a good reminder that markets don’t always react the way we’d expect.

Today’s headline said the U.S. added 57,000 jobs in June, well below expectations of 113,000. At first glance, that doesn’t sound like good news for the stock market…

Yet, at least initially, stocks moved higher.

Why?

The truth is, markets don’t trade on headlines alone. Investors are constantly trying to price in what today’s data might mean for tomorrow. Sometimes weaker economic data is viewed as increasing the likelihood of lower interest rates. Other times, the market focuses on something completely different. It’s rarely as simple as “good news equals stocks up” or “bad news equals stocks down.”

That’s exactly why reacting to every headline can be so costly.

Having a long term investment strategy means you don’t have to guess what the market will do after every jobs report, inflation number, or breaking news alert.

You have a process.

You know why you own what you own. And you let your plan, not the headlines, drive your decisions.

The news will always give us something to react to. Successful investing is often about knowing when not to react.

For context, the market movement referenced above reflects the initial reaction at the time this screenshot was taken. Markets can and often do change direction throughout the trading day.

Over the past 10 years, one of the biggest shifts we’ve seen in financial planning is that it’s become about so much more than investment returns.

Returns still matter!

But today we’re spending just as much time helping clients think through tax planning, healthcare costs, Social Security decisions, retirement income, and how changing legislation could affect their financial future over the next 10, 20, or even 30 years.

Some of the greatest opportunities to add value aren’t always found in picking a better investment.

They’re found in keeping more of what you’ve earned by making thoughtful decisions throughout retirement.

Working with professionals in the energy and chemical industries has reinforced that every family’s priorities, concerns, and goals are different.

That’s why planning should never start with a portfolio. It should start with understanding the people behind it.

The hardest part of investing isn’t finding the next great opportunity. It’s having the discipline to stick with a thoughtful plan when emotions tell you to do something different.

Long-term success is usually the result of consistent decisions, not constant decisions.
