For years now I have been struggling with my relationship to social media, feeling mostly like it’s a necessary tool for running an online business, not at all a place for my authentic expression. The past few months I’ve gotten a lot of help, and I have leaned on AI to help create more faster, but damn, dude, I’m not sounding like myself on here and I think you can tell. Probably at least in part because those of us using chatgpt for coaching promotion are only able to get so much variance in the tone it produces…
I’ve lost count of the times people have tried to support me in finding my authentic approach to marketing here, encouraging me to “be myself”…just on this platform. The truth is that being myself means not thinking about framing my experiences for public consumption. I’m happiest when I’m not oriented to this app, and I notice a very marked impact on how I think when I need to spend more time here for work; my creativity declines, my critical thinking requires more effort, and I am WAY more inundated with thoughts about botox and beauty products (when truly, I’m so grateful for the aging process). I just don’t want to think the way these apps want me to think.
That’s on a personal level. On a more societal level, it’s become increasingly hard to stomach the censorship and silencing of BIPOC voices and s*xuality professionals on the app, not to mention meta’s detrimental influence on global democracy.
Getting back to school and being in more real time, in person discussions has really highlighted all of this for me.
Now, please hear me when I say I appreciate all the benefits social media has brought to my life. I’ve made some incredible connections, I’ve built some beautiful relationships, and I’ve been able to establish a body of work I care so deeply about because you all engage with it. I am so happy for those of you who genuinely love creating here, and feel a sense of community. But for me, it’s time to experiment with a different way of doing things…[cont. in post / 🔗 in bio to stay connected through my email 💌 list]
