relations and communications between neighbors and maintain high residential standards for the community. Evergreen was among the first Baltimore neighborhoods to integrate during the 1950s, when the neighborhood saw an influx of Black professionals, school teachers, doctors, lawyers and government workers. Over the years, the association has worked diligently to respond to challenges facing the community. In 1993, Evergreen received a grant to develop its tutorial program for students ages 5-15 three nights per week at Union Memorial United Methodist Church, where the association holds its monthly meetings. Members have successfully organized in opposition to retail establishments (such as liquor stores) and other businesses that threaten the stability of the community. Now with the involvement of second and third generation residents, the legacy will continue. A newer generation to move Evergreen Protective Association into the present while honoring and preserving the rich history of its past.
