September 11, 2001: I was a line cook in Charleston, South Carolina. I woke up early and was cleaning my apartment when my mom called. She told me to turn on the news. Her words, "the United States was just attacked by terrorists." I was definitely in shock, nothing like this had ever happened in my lifetime, and I wasn't really sure what to do. I turned on the news in time to watch the second plane hit the tower. F**k. I was sad and angry and shocked and thought for sure that the casualties would be astronomical. Although one death is a tragedy, the fact that the first responders were able to evacuate people and limit the amount of casualties to under 3000, I believe, is a testament to their bravery. Not long after, my friend picked me up and we went to work. (which was a French brasserie in downtown Charleston) We had a staff meeting and they decided to play it by ear, as far as being open, because we didn't really know what to expect. As the evening progressed, we filled up more and more. Many people stranded with their flights and events canceled. They congregated at restaurants and bars across the nation. Watching and waiting. Strangers stopping strangers just to shake their hand. That day our great nation was instantly unified, we were one. We are a great nation. Always will be.
