There is a lot of controversy in the publishing industry right now over the use of AI. Entire books are being written with AI, and this has not been well received. AI is changing entire industries, causing layoffs, and protests against AI data centers.

I’d like to talk about how AI has impacted my own industry, the ghost tour industry. When we started this tour back in 2001, there were only a handful of ghost tours across the US. Now there are hundreds, built on the years of research and hard work by the small business owners that operate them.

Many small tour operators have published books and given interviews to various magazines, newspapers, and other sources over the years. All of that information has been digitized and put on the web. Enter AI.

In the past few years National Chain ghost tours have appeared on the scene, offering hundreds of tours across the US. Seeing that it took us over 3 years to research and write our own tour, I wondered how this was possible.

The answer: AI. Being accustomed to finding first hand sources for my questions, I located a person who was a writer for a National Chain ghost tour. Most people within this organization are required to sign an NDA. For some reason, this person did not.

What they told me was shocking and problematic. This person DID want to research tours and write original scripts. They were told by the National Chain that they could not. They were to write all material for the National Chain company using AI. No interviews. No original research. No LIBRARIES! They had to use material that was already out there on the web: other people’s research and stories.

This is why original, local tours should be supported. AI written scripts and tours are not an acceptable replacement for hard work.

We urge everyone put there to seek out the creators, not AI generated tours. Quality matters. Fairness matters. Reject AI substitutions for real creativity, and real creators.

Private tours can be booked any night of the week!

👻 The Original Fells Point Ghost Walk and the Mt Vernon Ghost Walk each last approximately 1 hour and are entirely outdoor walking tours. Pricing is as follows: $16/pp for groups of 20 or more, or a flat fee of $320 if less than 20 people. There is no maximum- we break large groups up into groups of 35, each with their own tour guide. Our group tours can be scheduled for any evening of the week, based upon tour guide availability.

🍺The Original Fells Point Haunted Pub Walk, for people aged 21 and over only, lasts approximately 2 hours and visits 3-4 pubs during that time. During this event, guests can choose to buy a drink at each stop. Pricing: $22/pp for groups of 15 or more, or a flat fee of $330 if less than 15 people. There is no maximum- we break large groups up into groups of 20, each with their own tour guide.
