The Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum
George Herman “Babe” Ruth was born February 6, 1895 at 216 Emory Street, a Baltimore row house that is now just a long fly ball from Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Rest in peace to Baltimore Colts legend Raymond Berry, the Hall of Fame wide receiver whose precise route running and sure hands helped define excellence in professional football. During his legendary career with the Baltimore Colts, Berry earned six Pro Bowl selections, won two NFL championships, and became one of the game's best wideouts. His impact on football continued as a successful coach for the New England Patriots and mentor. We honor his remarkable legacy and the lasting mark he left on the sport.
Raymond Berry shared this quote with us here at the museum once: "In 1994, I was in Yankee Stadium and had the pleasure of interviewing Yankees PA announcer Bob Sheppard. I asked Bob if he had been the PA announcer for the Colts-Giants 1958 Championship Game, and if so, what he remembered most about it. He said, unfortunately, what he remembered was saying, 'Unitas to Berry, Unitas to Berry, Unitas to Berry.'
He was referring to the drive at the end of regulation that led to the Colts kicking a game-tying field goal with seconds remaining to force the NFL's first overtime game. On that drive, Unitas targeted Berry three consecutive times for 62 yards to spearhead the attack. That drive effectively launched what we now know as the two-minute drill."
