✨ Happy Black History Month
The History of Jumping the Broom ✨
Jumping the broom is a powerful tradition rooted in African and African American history. Originating in West Africa, the broom symbolized sweeping away the old and welcoming a new beginning.
During slavery in the United States, when legal marriages were denied to enslaved people, couples jumped the broom as a sacred act of love, commitment, and resistance. It was a way to publicly honor their union despite the laws meant to erase it.
Today, jumping the broom remains a meaningful part of many Black weddings—honoring our ancestors, our resilience, and the enduring strength of Black love.
