Medicare 101: Understanding Part A & Part B

Medicare can feel like an alphabet soup of options, but let’s break it down in plain English. If you’re approaching 65 (or helping someone who is), here’s what you need to know about Original Medicare (Part A & Part B).

✅ Medicare Part A – Hospital Insurance
Think of Part A as your safety net for major medical needs. It covers:
🏥 Hospital Stays – Inpatient care, semi-private rooms, meals, and necessary treatments
🏠 Skilled Nursing Facility Care – Short-term recovery after a hospital stay
👩‍⚕️ Home Health Care – Limited in-home care for recovery
🫂 Hospice Care – End-of-life care services

💰 Cost?
Most people get Part A premium-free if they or their spouse paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years. However, there are deductibles and coinsurance costs.

✅ Medicare Part B – Medical Insurance
Part B covers your everyday healthcare needs, including:
🩺 Doctor Visits – Primary care & specialists
💉 Preventive Care – Screenings, vaccines, and wellness visits
🚑 Outpatient Services – Surgeries, lab tests, and medical equipment
🚨 Emergency Services – When you need immediate care

💰 Cost?
Unlike Part A, Part B has a monthly premium (standard rate in 2025 is $185.00). There’s also an annual deductible ($257 in 2025) and a 20% coinsurance for most services.

Why Does This Matter?
Original Medicare (Part A & B) is just the foundation. It doesn’t cover prescriptions, dental, vision, or hearing. That’s where Medicare Advantage (Part C) or Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans come in to help reduce out-of-pocket costs.

August was a busy and productive month for us at Integral Benefits Group!

The first week of August our amazing partner UnitedHealthcare and Ed Shepherd, treated the team to a few rounds of bowling. They wanted to acknowledge their hard work and dedication to the communities we serve in Maryland. We had such a blast and even won some prizes!

We then hosted our third Turning 65 Medicare Seminar and had a packed room with a lot of questions. We do these monthly in English and in Spanish so that we can provide unbiased and accurate info as it pertains to Medicare. We strive to empower our communities to make informed decisions when it comes to their healthcare!

Then to end the month some of the team surprised our leader Christopher Farmer at the office with cake and gifts. Why? It was his Birthday and he was working. We value our team and pour into them and for Chris he is committed to that mission regardless of the day.
