William Sydney Porter rented this Queen Anne-style cottage in the early 1890s. Originally from Greensboro, North Carolina, he moved to Texas in his early 20s. In Austin, Porter worked day jobs as a draftsman in the General Land Office and as a teller at the First National Bank. In 1898, Porter was found guilty of embezzling money from the bank and was sentenced to five years in federal prison. Hen

Let's talk wallpaper!

A well-ornamented wall was an important interior design component of the 18th, 19th, and 20th century America. As early as 1700, wallpapers were among the recorded stock of a Boston merchant. We have several beautiful wallpapers inside our Austin O. Henry house, including this one of William Morris most recognized designs titled "Strawberry Thief." While we tend to see more Great-tailed Grackles in our courtyard, this playful display of Thrushes in the garden would have been a charming addition to Athol and O. Henry's home.
