I could never overstate how much influence James Gadson has been on my drumming. And while I’m super sad that he has moved on from this earthly realm, it is bringing me a lot of joy to revisit the videos we took during our rehearsals from him back in 2018, when he performed with at a special Funky Sole event.

Many are aware of his drumming, but not as many have heard his beautiful soulful voice, as heard on songs like “What Can You Bring Me” by Charles Wright & The Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band— the band where he got his start. It was really cool hearing him tell stories from back in those days.

If you’re a drummer, look closely at his sticking for those cool snare fills, and look at how relaxed he is while playing those fast 16th notes on the ride cymbal! To this day I’m still learning from you Mr. Gadson! Thank you 🙏✨🙏
