Upcoming Changes to Access Control Devices submittals and review

On September 1st, the Austin Fire Department (AFD) will begin reviewing access control/electrical locking system submittals as part of the Building Plan Review (PR) process. This is a substantial change in policy and workflow, as access control device submittals have been a separate submittal to AFD up to this point. This change aims to streamline the review and approval process for these items.

Access control device submittals for projects that were approved prior to Sept 1st, can be made to AFD (the current method), or can be filed as a revision to the approved PR through Commercial Plan Review.

There are a number of requirements for submitted plans and associated documents for a project containing access control devices. Included in these requirements are items such as clearly showing all locking devices and exit sign locations on floor plans, applicable symbol legends, matching door hardware schedules, sequences of operation, fire department security override switch locations, equipment cut sheets, and a handful of other items more specific to occupancy type. Please see the linked document in the following post for more info.

Site Plan Exemption Simplified for Tree Permits
Starting in February of this year, separate tree permits are no longer required for projects with site plan exemptions.
Under the revised process, the plans received during the exemption process will serve as the tree permit.
This approach is consistent with those used for site plans and site plan corrections.
Cases that have already received guidance to submit a tree ordinance review application, sometimes referred to as a TORA or tree permit, will proceed under the former process. New submissions will not include this step.
Applicants with questions about their projects should contact the original tree reviewer listed on the comment report.
