What's causing that eerie green glow? Uranium! 💚👀

This early-to-mid 20th century neoclassical revival light fixture features custard glass made with uranium which glows bright green under UV light.

Uranium was added to glass as a colorant producing shades ranging from pale yellow and ivory to vivid green. It was especially popular from the late 1800s through the 1930s.

American production largely stopped during World War II when uranium became a restricted material reserved for military use. Although some production resumed afterward, uranium glass never fully returned to mainstream popularity.

Is it safe? As a light fixture and decorative object, it presents very little risk. Antique uranium glassware is also generally considered low risk, though many collectors choose not to use it for everyday food or drinks, especially if it's damaged.

Exciting new piece in the shop! This lovely beveled glass window is from the historic Menger Hotel in San Antonio.

Opened in 1859 beside the Alamo the has hosted presidents, military leaders and countless travelers including Theodore Roosevelt who recruited volunteers for the rough riders there in 1898.

It's also considered one of Texas's most haunted hotels 👻

These aren't just old columns! Salvaged from a 1920s Austin home. They may actually be older than the house itself.

From their composition material to their Roman composite capitals. These columns tell the story that stretches from the ancient world to present-day, Texas.

One of the reasons we love architectural salvage is that every piece carries clues about where it came from, who made it and why it mattered.

New flooring alert! 🪵 We salvaged these floors from an old church here in Austin. We can't wait to share the rest of the job, but we wanted to shine a light on the flooring in particular and share all the history we uncovered behind this old growth wood.

A fun fact we discovered along the way: the recent Oscar-winning film Sinners used the Bogalusa train station as a filming location.

We're still closed today but we made a very casual, very demure, and definitely not planned video about our current favorite pieces in the shop. Have a great weekend 👋👋
