DMing with Kids: How to Teach Worldbuilding

Plan ahead where the world can be flexible enough for the kid to contribute - Kids often need more railroading than adults to help the story progress. Planning ahead for world aspects that are open to adaptation helps DMs who are nervous about a kid’s contribution derailing the story until you get comfortable with collaborating in this way.

Make a concrete ask - In real life, kids are often told they’re not in charge. Kids are looking for cues from adults for when it’s okay to jump in and make an impact to the world and story in game. As a bonus, this helps them be prepared to impact the real world too!

Connect the choice to a previous character moment - Kids may not automatically feel a personal connection to a decision about something in your fantasy setting. It’s the DM’s job to make their contribution personal.

Narrate how the kid’s choice concretely affects the world - Kids are empowered when DMs show how their contribution actually changes the experience and outcome of the characters in your fantasy world. It’s the DMs job to make their contribution impactful.

Narrate how the kid’s choice concretely affects their character - Kids may need help understanding how their decision makes their character feel or changes their character development moving forward. It’s the DM’s job to make their contribution meaningful.

Expert mode = use the choice to introduce a new plot point - If you can, make a signal to your players that the contribution has immediately ended, begun, or changes something within the main storyline. This type of reward will encourage players to share more worldbuilding ideas in the future!
