Their struggle is hidden behind the curtain of community involvement, a loving family, successful businesses, and accolades galore.
As the substance abuse becomes increasingly problematic, they blame their need to drink on overwhelming stress, hectic schedules, and….everyone else
This is not goal-driven. This is escape-driven behavior and it’s a hallmark of addiction.

If you’re the loved one of an addict who is trying to get or stay sober, you hang on every word believing THIS IS THE TIME IT WILL STICK.
It might be. It might not be, but if they have made their way into a treatment facility, here are a few of our most common tips to follow as they are being discharged:
1. If the person is leaving an in-patient rehab and have to fly to get back home, don’t let them fly alone. Airports can be extraordinarily difficult places for newly sober people.
2. Do not make the “pick up” from rehab, a family reunion. This isn’t a college graduation and while the sentiment is nice, it can be too much of an emotional overload and trigger a relapse
3. Don’t drink at dinner. Seriously please clear your table of booze.
They will likely tell you they “want you to drink” or “wine really isnt their issue” or “they don’t even want to drink.” I’m not saying they don’t believe these things, but they are manipulative statements.
4. Give yourself some grace for loving
someone who is trying to be a little less broken and above all, don’t let yourself feel shame for not knowing exactly HOW to love them during this time.
