Ciara Shuffles

Cause did you know you can catch a phrase in the music in just 4 beats? In some cases even 2. That’s all you need… and then you take a chance by trusting the music and throwing a move (or accent) on the next time that pattern might come around. One of my favorite hacks about dance that’s very much not a secret, is knowing to study musicality.🎶 That’s half the battle of becoming a “great” dancer. The best dancers have the most fun, and those dancers get lost in the music.🪽

Are you talking about musical structure in your beginner classes? There’s something to be said about it, even in the first shuffle class! For example, these are points I like to get across to my students:

• why I’m teaching in 8-counts.
• structure and phrasing of EDM.
• what sounds we hit and highlight in shuffling.
• the innate feeling of body to music connection.

And (hint): you’ll grow not only talented shufflers, but SMART shufflers. Shufflers that feel empowered to take risks and make choices. And for that reason… I’ve seen so many beautiful dancers and students come alive as strong, artistic beings.🥲💕

To know your dance is to know no boundaries. And half of connecting your movement to where you want it to go… is hearing and understanding the music more deeply… there’s so many layers to this I can geek out. And cry🦋 lol, but it also brings us even further into our body by also adding depth, texture, and what I like to call “embedded” shuffling. Where you’ve repped the movement enough so the muscle control is there, and emotional being is in the front seat. Brain in the backseat, chillin. Not always though, cause freestyling is always strategic. Oh the balance ~
