Bulla en Austin is a community project dedicated to the Bullerengue tradition from Colombia’s Urabá and Caribbean regions—an Afro-Colombian musical form known for its sung-dance style, powerful drums, handclaps, and storytelling vocals that honor nature, community life, and ancestral memory. Founded in 2018 by Beatriz López and Víctor-Andrés Cruz the group emerged from the immigrant experience and collective learning that began in New York City through Bulla en el Barrio, where its founders trained with master artists and deepened their knowledge in Colombia.
The evening will begin with a brief presentation on the bullerengue tradition by Víctor-Andrés Cruz a Berklee College of Music graduate with over 20 years of community-based learning alongside tradition bearers in Colombia and within the Colombian diaspora in the United States. This will be followed by a special performance by Bulla en Austin.
