A very fitting tribute tonight to Jaidyn, with remarkable restraint and composure from the family, full of love and grief for a remarkable 16 year old. I hope they were boosted by the super turnout and the excellent support from the Bangor Protestant Boys flute band.

Today, Green Party Councillor Lauren Kendall has shared her breast cancer diagnosis to raise awareness and encourage early detection.
“This has been the most distressing time I have ever experienced… it has completely shaken my sense of identity, the anxiety is immense.”
Lauren is urging women to be aware that breast cancer symptoms can vary. In her case, it was pain and a persistent red mark like a bruise that made her see the GP.
Signs and symptoms of breast cancer include:
- A lump or swelling in the breast, upper chest or armpit
- A change to the skin, such as puckering or dimpling
- A change in the colour of the breast – the breast may look darker, red or inflamed
- A ni**le change, for example it has become pulled in (inverted)
- Rash or crusting around the ni**le
- Unusual liquid (discharge) from either ni**le
- Changes in size or shape of the breast
“I didn’t have obvious symptoms… We all must check our breasts regularly so we know what's normal. Any change, no matter how small, contact your GP.”
Lauren also spoke about the reality of navigating the health system, including long delays following an urgent referral: “Every day is filled with fear… you can’t help but feel that the delays are letting you die.”
She has thanked all the NHS staff and support services, while highlighting the immense pressure they are under.
Lauren intends to continue serving the Holywood and Clandeboye community while undergoing treatment, with the full support of the Green Party.
Green Party leader Mal O’Hara said: “Lauren is a valued friend and colleague. Sharing her personal story to encourage other women to check their breasts is testament to her courage and commitment to women’s health. We all wish Lauren every success with her treatment and a speedy recovery.”
She hopes to encourage more women to check, know what's normal and report any change as early as possible.
