Mad love for Tom Lin’s new novel, Babylon, South Dakota! X-Files vibes (minus the aliens and monsters) meets family saga with lyrical prose making my heart sing. A Chinese couple immigrates to Babylon, South Dakota with little to their name other than a half taels of gold, personal effects, a silk bag of Chrysanthemum seeds, and dreams. Even before the military decides to build a silo on their property, a sense of otherworldy reality tints their lives. Whether the moment is strange or mundane, each moment finds me more in love with these characters whose lives are simultaneously prosaic and extraordinary. The contradictions are delectable. I have laughed madly, sobbed in grief, and gotten chills while reading this engrossing novel. Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy now, then come meet Tom Lin on 7/9 at the store!
