Compass For Hope

After observing another organization serving the homeless through Facebook a few years ago I watched and watched and kept telling myself I was going to get involved yet didn't. Then in June 2018 I walked out of a CVS where a very attractive lady was walking behind me. I had noticed her and knew she was right behind me as I exited the store. A homeless man sat just outside the door and I glanced at him but hurried on my way to my car. I had a front row seat to grace. This beautiful lady had stopped and handed the man some cash but she also held his hand and listened to him for a few minutes. She gave him the most valuable asset she had, her time and attention. Shame came over me as I had missed the chance to be kind but I certainly got to witness it in action. I went on about my day and through my summer but I kept thinking about the lady and the grace she showed. In August 2018 a friend Karen shared a post about a local man doing things for the homeless in Augusta. I knew this was the message meant for me. I got involved and things are really building momentum. I have big dreams of the impact we can have if we work together to show some kindness to the marginalized group of society that needs us more than we may realize. In December 2019, we changed our name to Compass for Hope. Over the past year we have gained traction and are heading in a beautiful direction. We are so proud of the growth and continue to raise the bar and expectations of what we can do locally. Augusta deserves an effort worthy of servants and not just another group that fizzles out and gets disillusioned. We serve weekly and we are proud of the impact we have every Sunday. Almost all of the Compass for Hope volunteers work jobs and give above and beyond the expectations as we truly love the way some of our guests react each Sunday when they greet and thank us for our reliable service. The pandemic of 2020 has slowed the way we can bring in volunteers but we are still serving every day and trying to help the lost find their way.
