I joined the team at a clinic in Southern Maine and spent some time talking with patients in the waiting area about their experience with the program. One man immediately lit up and called me over. He said, “Look at this,” pointing to his hearing aid. “Can you believe it? This program paid for me to have one of these.”

His face was absolutely beaming. The difference being able to hear has made for him, after many years of hearing loss, was clear in both his expression and his voice. His gratitude was profound.
I also knew the backstory. He was one of two men at that camp who needed hearing aids, which are not something we are typically able to cover within our budget. When the program manager raised the question, we talked through what might be possible and ultimately used flexible donation funds to make it happen.
