HVAC Double Check

This week we’re celebrating the women contributing their expertise and perspective to the construction industry.

From engineering design to project collaboration, their work helps create buildings that serve people every day.

Meet Tricia Drake, P.E., LEED AP, Founder and Principal Engineer at HVAC Double Check.

Tricia didn’t originally plan to work in HVAC. In college she studied autonomous vehicles, but after entering the industry she discovered she loved the puzzle-solving nature of mechanical design and the collaborative process of improving how buildings function.

One of the most rewarding parts of the work is seeing projects come to life and knowing the systems she helped design quietly support the comfort of thousands of people every day. “When mechanical systems are designed well, people rarely notice them — they just experience a comfortable building.”

A recent project highlight came early in design when relocating the mechanical room improved the layout of the entire building — a great example of how early engineering collaboration can shape a project for the better.

Her advice for women considering a career in construction or engineering:

Stick with it. The industry can feel challenging at first, but it becomes increasingly rewarding as you gain experience and confidence. The more you learn, the more opportunities there are to solve interesting problems and contribute to projects that serve people for decades.

Outside of work, Tricia enjoys getting outdoors and playing disc golf whenever the weather cooperates.
