The early days of are fascinating. Many people don’t realize that AI made its debut back in the 1960s with a program called ELIZA, which simulated human conversation. It later became available on CP/M machines, marking an important milestone in computing history.

Researchers have revived "ELIZA," the world’s first chatbot, using its original code found in MIT archives after nearly 60 years. Dubbed the “Lucy” of AI chatbots, ELIZA was initially developed in the 1960s by MIT professor Joseph Weizenbaum.

ELIZA’s simple yet innovative design mimicked a therapist, responding to user inputs with questions like “In what way?” This early chatbot introduced foundational concepts for modern AI technologies, highlighted in a recent paper on arXiv.

Rediscovered in 2021 by a Stanford cognitive scientist and an MIT archivist, the chatbot’s original code, written in the now-obsolete MAD-SLIP language, has been brought back to life, offering a rare glimpse into the mindset of AI’s earliest pioneers.
