Willie Ealey, a Life Well and Widely Lived

Willie married Geneva Ashley, his high school sweetheart. They were married for 63 years until her passing in 2023. They settled in the Bronx, and Willie earned his degree from New York City Community College of Applied Arts and Sciences in 1975. The city suited him. The pace, the culture, the music pouring out of every corner.

And speaking of music, Willie does not simply listen to jazz and blues; he lives inside them. His favorites read like a hall of fame all by themselves: Lena Horne, Nat King Cole, Louis Jordan, Johnny Mathis, Billy Eckstine, Joe Williams, Frank Sinatra, Nina Simone, Count Basie. Blues-wise, he rides with B.B. King, Ray Charles, James Brown, and Bobby "Blue" Bland. He and Geneva used to frequent the Royal Peacock on Sweet Auburn Avenue, one of Atlanta's storied music venues. If you think you know who he has met or interacted with over the decades, you are probably underestimating the number by half. Willie knows people, and people know Willie. (We tried to get the full list. He smiled and said nothing. Which somehow made it better.)
